The 9th Annual United Way Golf Outing Brings Out the Good in Golfers

It was a bright and sunny Monday afternoon on the green, at Pottawattomie Country Club in Michigan City. The country club played host to the 9th Annual United Way Golf Outing, for the La Porte County division of the United Way. 144 golfers showed up, ready to enjoy the day’s activities.

The afternoon started out with a lovely luncheon in the clubhouse. As attendees browsed the buffet line, they also eyed the silent auction table that was near by. The silent auction held an abundance of wonderful items up for bid, including signed photographs of legendary golfers Arnold Palmer and Tiger Woods. There were also many other prizes to be won throughout the day as well.

Jack Elia is the Assistant General Manager of Blue Chip Casino, and is also on the Board of Directors for the United Way.

He explained, “This year we have a lot more sponsorships. We have 36 teams, 144 golfers in total. We sold out [the event] this year and last year. We have golfers from all over the county here today, and a lot of them donated much more than the ticket price to the United Way of La Porte County.”

When asked what his favorite part of the event was, he stated, “Well, I’m not golfing today. I get to ride around with the General Manager of Blue Chip Casino, Lief Erickson, handing out cigars, talking to people, and just having a good time. It’s wonderful being out with all the members of the community that support this great charitable foundation. We’re having lunch with everybody before we get started; and we end the day with a great steak dinner. We have prizes and trophies, silent auction items and more. It’s just camaraderie for a great cause.”

The United Way of La Porte County helps out 22 partner agencies in the county, such as The Red Cross and The Salvation Army.

Dave Sisk, Manager of Community Engagement with the United Way said, “Our main focus is with education and common health in our community. We are a very small office that raises about a million dollars in our little county, which is very cool. This golf outing today will raise about $50,000 dollars of that money. This event has been sold out for two months in advance. Our major sponsors, Pottawattomie County Club, Sullair, Blue Chip Casino, and Tonn and Blank Construction are just fantastic. It’s the best golf outing in the area.”

Sisk went on to say, “These golfers have paid to be out here, ranging from $900 a team to $7,500 a team and they are here to have fun! They are out here to win cash, sample some drinks, get free cigars, every single hole has something for them. They can even try to win a car from Sauers Automotive in La Porte. While all of this is great, for me I’m not a golfer. What’s exciting for me is the steak dinner. The dinner is awesome and that’s when we get to hand out the awards to everyone.”

It was a day of fun in the sun, while raising money for a wonderful cause in our community. For more information on the United Way Golf Outing, please visit their website at www.unitedwaylpc.org
