The Lives of the Saints

Last Friday, Miss Nowlin’s first grade class dressed up as saints for a class project. As they entered the school building, faces beaming and footsteps eager, a saintly aura entered the building. They lined up for our all school Mass and began walking down the hallway to church. Some of the saints skipped, some walked slowly, a few hummed to themselves, and few talked to the saints around them. Notable were the smiles that radiated from all of them. The ripple of smiles followed them. Parents, teachers, and other students couldn’t help but grin at the sight of the small saintly parade. Now, by lunchtime, the saintly crew had lost some of its luster. The costumes were hanging precariously from shoulders, and hats and scarves had long been discarded, but the smiles were still evident.

Isn’t that how it is with all of us trying to lead “saintly” lives? We start off with eager feet and faces beaming, but something happens along our parade route of life. We stumble; we talk to the wrong people and are led away from the parade, the song in our head becomes cacophony of worries, our good deeds become good intentions. This time of year we are reminded that it is never too late to get back in the parade. We are all part of the saintly band. So polish off that saintly aura and come and “be in that number.”
