The Science of Music is Examined at Valpo Middle Schools

Paul Nord from the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Valparaiso University came into Ben Franklin Middle School on Thursday to give the students a unique music lesson. With interesting instruments that conducted sound and provided examples of wavelengths and changes of pitch and volume, Nord brought out the scientific aspects of music.

Sherri Nord, the middle school orchestra teacher at Ben Franklin along with Tim Kopf (fellow music teacher sat with a class of eighth grade students and listened attentively to the presentation.

“Mr. Nord is giving us demonstrations on acoustics to help us understand sound and how it affects our stringed instrument,“ Mrs. Nord said. “This helps to connect the science and music together so we can understand both parts better. Once we understand the physics behind our instruments it can help us to get a more resonant sound and help us to play better, too.”

Professor Nord was conducting multiple demonstrations at the middle schools. The day before he had presented to a sixth grade music class at BF and he planned on presenting again after this session, and Friday he will be over at Thomas Jefferson Middle School to speak with the sixth, seventh and eighth grade music classes.

The students actively participated in activities, asked questions of Professor Nord and engaged in the myriad of discussions that popped up during the presentation. Mr. Kopf even got up and provided a few musical examples to help the students better understand the topic at hand.

It was a most interesting event. One that would benefit any budding musician or those interested in the wondrous world of science. To find out more about the VU Physics and Astronomy Department, click here!
