The United Way of Porter County’s Power of Youth Council Allocates Grants

POY-300x163The United Way of Porter County’s Power of Youth Council will be holding their allocation ceremony, The Power of Giving, on Monday, May 23 from 5-6 p.m. at the United Way of Porter County office (951 Eastport Centre Drive, Valparaiso). This event is open to the public.

The Power of Giving will be the final event for the 2010-2011 Power of Youth Council. The Council will be allocating $8,500 to local nonprofits with programs that address teen substance abuse prevention. By hosting The Battle of the Bands: Battle Against Drugs and the Valpo 13.1 Race, the Power of Youth Council was able to raise awareness about teen substance abuse as well as generate the funding for their grants. In addition, thank you to Best Buy for their generous donation and awarding the Power of Youth their Tag Team Award.

unitedway_portercountyThe Power of Youth Council (POY) is a 20-member council with student representatives from all Porter County high schools. The POY Council is a program designed to promote healthy youth development through hands-on volunteer experience and education about the nonprofit environment in Porter County. The POY Council members are civically engaged student leaders, active role models and advocates of positive decision-making. The Council collaborates with individuals and organizations to empower the youth of Porter County and provide opportunities for youth to become strong, positive and life-long contributors of their communities.
