Get ready to dust off the bikes and hit the trail for the 2nd Annual Great Futures Family Bike Ride on May 11, 2013. Hundreds of riders from across the Region participate in this celebration of quality family time and healthy living.

Hosted by Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County, the Great Futures Family Bike Ride is a non-competitive ride that celebrates quality family time and healthy lifestyles. Bike riders of all ages will enjoy the event which takes place on the family-friendly Prairie-Duneland Trail. Because it is a non-competitive ride, families can choose the distance that best suits them. Some may choose to ride a couple of miles. Others may choose to ride the 18-mile round trip. Refreshment and water stations, maps, and rest areas will be available at four points along the trail from Portage, IN to Chesterton, IN.

Families can check in at two locations on the Prairie-Duneland trail. Main stage activities will take place at Countryside Park located at 5250 U.S. 6 in Portage, IN. Main stage activities include free bike safety inspections and helmet fittings by Leo’s Mobile Bike Service, appearances by local mascots, and more! Riders may also check-in at the Duneland Trailhead located at 108 S. 15th St. in Chesterton, IN. Free bike safety inspections and helmet fittings by Chesterton Bicycle Station will be available. Check in begins at 7:30 a.m. and the ride begins at 8:30 a.m. at both locations.

“I rode the entire 18 miles with my dad and I was only 8 years old!! We stopped a few times and had fruit and water along the way so we could rest,” said Bailey Ranta, Club member of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Porter County-South Haven Unit. “I plan on riding the entire course again this year with my friends. I cannot wait because I want to prove to my friends that I can do it again this year!”

Join the fun and register on-line at www.bgcpoco.org now through April 26, 2013. The cost to participate is $7.00 per person for ages 5 and up. A commemorative t-shirt is included in the fee for the first 300 registered participants.
