Thomas Jefferson Academic Super Bowl Teams Bring Home Top Recognitions

Area-social-studies-winners-2013The Thomas Jefferson Middle School Academic Super Bowl team garnered three Class 2 Top Ten Team recognitions at Saturday's Junior Division Academic Super Bowl Meet at LaPorte High School. Classes are determined by student enrollment. This year's topic was "Ancient Greece."

The Social Studies squad, captained by Joe McMurtrey, finished in 7th place. Team members Hannah Mitchell, Hannah Lopez, Antonio Rosario, and Nate Pierce correctly answered 18 out of 25 questions covering Greek geography, philosophers, wars, and history. The Social Studies team is coached by Justin Krenz.

Math team captain Marybeth Scheibel and team members Kendall Wrage, Lexi Lahey, and Colin Topping solved equations, measured angles, computed areas, and studied the lives of famous mathematicians on their way to a fourth place finish. The team, coached by Linda Kemper, mastered 19 out of 25 questions for the win.

English scholars Allison Skadberg, Zhuri Bryant, Aidan Armstrong, Colin Thompson, and captain Olivia Rosario successfully defended the school's 2012 state championship by once again placing first. The squad fielded questions about Greek gods, Sophocles's Antigone, Homer's Odyssey, and Riordan's The Lightning Thief, only missing one item in the competition. The English team earned a plaque and individual state championship medals for their effort. Jane Strayer coaches the English team.

225 teams (with 3,848 students on their rosters) competed at 14 Area Competition Sites on April 27.
