Tips for Cleaning Leather Seats

Cleaning-Leather-SeatsCompared to the standard cloth upholstery that comes in many cars, leather seats look better and improve comfort. They’re more expensive, though, and require a little bit more care so they don’t dry out and crack. Thankfully, cleaning leather seats isn’t hard at all and is an easy way to maintain the value of your car. Here are a few tips from Bosak Honda, a Valparaiso-area car dealership.

Vacuum and Cleaning
Park your car in the driveway or in the garage and grab a vacuum cleaner. Carefully go through each of the seats making sure to get everything out of the cracks (this is probably a good time to clean your floors too). To properly clean your seats, you’ll need a sponge and leather cleaner.

You never want to use harsh household cleaners as leather seats are pretty sensitive. Leather cleaner can be purchased at a dealership parts department or at any auto supplies store. Squirt some cleaner on the sponge and wipe the seats down in a circular motion. After you are done, dry each seat with a cloth.

Conditioning Leather Seats
Make sure all seats are completely dry before the conditioning process. For this step, you’ll need a leather conditioner. They’re easily found, but we recommend buying one with sunscreen in it to protect the seats from drying out. It sounds a little crazy, but just like your kin, a conditioner with sunscreen will protect the seats from sun damage.

Conditioner helps your leather seats stay soft and supple. Put some on a clean cotton cloth and apply it to the seat like you would with sunscreen.

Let it Dry
After your done with the conditioner, you’ll want to let the car sit for at least an hour to let the seats dry out. When it’s done drying, the leather should be just as smooth as when you first bought the car.
