TJMS Academic Super Bowl Team Earns a Blaze of Blue!

Color us blue with a dash of white! The Thomas Jefferson Middle School Academic Super Bowl team sprinted out of the gate at the Hoosier Academic Super Bowl Invitational, hosted by TJMS, on Wednesday, April 6, and seldom looked back.

Coach Justin Krenz's Social Studies squad garnered third place white ribbons for their efforts, answering questions about Indiana history, famous Hoosiers, and the Indy 500. Captain Carter Walworth was assisted in the round by Lucia Otten and Andrew Karr.

Olivia Dres, Ryan Heise, Kate McGrath, and Captain Devishi Jha, members of the TJMS Math team, led the parade of blue ribbons, capturing first place for correctly solving the most equations, slopes, and knowing the most facts about Hoosier mathematicians. Coach Linda Kemper was extremely proud of her group!

The English ladies continued the blue bonanza by earning first place in their discipline. Captain Sydney Vorrier and trusty cohorts Shannon McCall, Lily O'Quinn, and Lauren Skadberg navigated questions about literature written by Indiana authors James Whitcomb Riley, John Mellencamp, Kurt Vonnegut, and Gene Stratton Porter. Given the difficulty of the material, Coach Jane Strayer was highly impressed with the girls' performance.

Yet another blue ribbon and first place plaque went to the Science squad. Coach Doug Wassila's scientists - Andrew Lozano, Tobias Fredrick, Teresa Nelson, Joel Teeple, and Captain Abby Glover - mastered soil composition, clouds, minerals, and agriculture on their way to the winners' circle.

TJMS's Interdisciplinary team scored another team blue. Captain Sydney Vorrier and squad members Abby Glover, Carter Walworth, Devishi Jha, Andrew Karr, and Ryan Heise bested all other squads in the multi-subject final round.

After all the scores were tabulated, the Overall Champion of the evening was awarded to the TJMS team. TJ scored a personal best of 88 points for the Invitational win and the championship plaque.

The team will compete on April 30 at LaPorte High School for state placings.
