Top Things I Did Not Miss While I Was in Florida

I started to write a list of some things I did not miss, when I went on a mini-vacation...

Local politics. I could tell what they mean when they say "all politics are local" when I saw the sticker for some guy running for office as the 2nd District Mosquito Control Director. Did not spend much time watching tv, online, or reading a newspaper, so it was great to pretty much ignore all that rhetoric streaming at you.

Making our bed. Ok- honestly, I hardly ever make the bed as my wife would tell you, but it was nice to have it done for us, and I know it made Natalie happy. And when Natalie is happy, I am happy.

Staying indoors. There is something about vacation anywhere really that makes you want to go outdoors and appreciate the fresh air, the sun, or whatever or whomever there is to see.

Being over-connected. Either because of natural wiring or the businesses I have always been in, it is quite easy to resist cutting the cord for any length of time – even when it is a wireless cord so to speak. Was awesome to disconnect, and stay disconnected for long enough for the brain to seriously think about all the stuff it doesn’t normally think about every day.

Alarm clock. I tend to get up fairly early no matter what, but it sure is nice to go to be saying I am going to wake up when I wake up. Even if the time does not change a lot, it is just nice knowing it can.

Bad news. When I am connected all the time – to a radio, tv, paper, the web, you see lot’s of stuff stream by. Bad people, bad things happening, a slanted view of the world it is hard to ignore unless you really are spending time ignoring a lot. Was great to just interact with nice people. And not just because they were my wife’s family that I am super glad to be a part of. I swear the guy driving the bus to the parking lot on the way home at Midway from the trip was an incredibly nice guy. So was the lady making breakfast at the hotel, and the guy that was staying there that bought his wife a Kindle so she could read everything she wanted to in large type.

Being away from my wife. I truly think that most anything I could do would be more enjoyable doing with my wife, and I was incredibly lucky to not have to share her with the day to day load of all the stuff she normally has on her plate, and I have on mine, and to have her right there next to me the whole time to enjoy that down time with.

I thought a lot about all the things that I missed when I was on my mini-vacation like my kids, my home, my crazy boring food life that I love, the people I work with, etc., but why not celebrate what you did not miss? Just my way of looking at the bright side of things.
