Trio Of Boilers Selected For Indiana Hoops Hall Of Fame

Three former Boilermakers represent the Purdue men’s basketball program in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2010, as Chuck Bavis, Ron Hughes and Brian Walker have been named to the 15-member class that will be inducted in March.

The trio of 2010 selections gives Purdue 74 representatives in the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame, located in New Castle. Players become eligible for the Hall of Fame 25 years after their high school graduation. A statewide board of directors, composed of coaches, journalists, administrators and businessmen, oversees the selection process each year.

A native of Garrett, Bavis (1968-69) spent two seasons at Purdue, averaging 4.5 points and 3.7 rebounds in 47-career games. He was a member of the 1968-69 squad that won the Big Ten title and advanced to the national title game.

Hughes (1963-65), a Kokomo product, averaged 7.6 points and 2.2 rebounds in a Purdue career that saw him play in 58 games for the Old Gold and Black. In 1961, he made a pair of free throws with three seconds left in overtime to propel Kokomo High School over Manual for the state championship.

Walker (1979-81) played in 100 games for Purdue with 99 starts, averaging 4.5 points and 5.8 assists per contest. The Lebanon native dished out 198 assists to help lead the Boilermakers to the 1979 Big Ten crown, and the second and third spots on Purdue’s single-season assists chart with 205 in 1981 and 198 in 1979, respectively. His 572-career assists rank second in program history, and are just three shy of the 10th-best total in the history of the Big Ten, while his average of 5.8 assists per game is also the second-best in Purdue annals.

The Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame Men’s Banquet will take place at Primo Banquet Hall in Indianapolis on March 24, 2010. Further information is available by calling the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame at (765) 529-1891.
