Ever since Frieda Nelson was a young girl, she dreamed of doing design. Since 2008, she has proudly served as the cabinet designer at Tudor Floors & More Carpet One. But her interior design journey didn’t start there.
“I have always loved art and color,” Nelson said. “I really liked space planning so I took some drafting classes in high school. Right after high school I went to Columbia College for interior design.”
After she graduated, she worked with American Kitchen and Bath, which jump-started her education in the trade.
“There I learned a lot— I hand drew layouts, and worked part house and showroom,” she said.
Nelson ended up working for Home Depot, starting in the design center. She soon switched to kitchen, where she completed the company’s kitchen college training program. There, each cabinet was commission, and even though it was a great experience, she was looking for something more meaningful.
“At the time the Tudor team was searching for employees. A friend of mine was working there and recommended it. I was nervous, because I had been somewhere for so long,” Nelson said.
“Immediately, they took me in with open arms. They have a homey environment and are so family oriented. They are customer service driven,” she continued.
When Tudor Floors & More Carpet One decided to take on cabinets, Nelson thought, ‘I’m your girl!’.
A typical day for Frida is… that there is no typical one. With each day comes a new client— so following up with present, past, and future clients is an important part of her job.
Sometimes she goes out on-site with estimators to figure out what is needed for that project. Right now she is working on several houses. She also works on design plans with an advanced projecting system.
“I use a 3-D design system, and have the option to pick through cabinet vendors as their catalogs are downloaded into it,” Nelson explained. “You can choose layouts for customers, print out elevations, and evaluate it out for them.”
Nelson said that she and Tudor Floors & More Carpet One are excited to be expanding in the cabinet direction, including their newly-offered quartz countertops.
“I love what I do because every customer is a new challenge. It’s never the same plan or design. Everyone has a unique need and I’m just trying to help them select the best choices,” Nelson said. “We have a lot to choose from. We are ever changing and keeping with the times.
“It’s a great progressive environment to be in,” Nelson said. “I love it.”
