Two Detectives Retire from Valparaiso Police Department

The Valparaiso Police Department would like to announce the retirement of Detective Lieutenant Tom Horn and Detective Brian Thurman, effective April 30, 2019.

Detective Lieutenant Tom Horn has served the City of Valparaiso for 29 years, accepting his first ap-pointment as a Probationary Patrolman on April 1, 1990. Tom attained his first promotion, to Ser-geant, on April 7, 1995 and was again promoted on March 5, 1999, to Lieutenant. On March 27, 2001, Tom was transferred to the Detective Bureau . During his career, Tom received many com-mendations for his service and was active as an instructor and Field Training Officer. Tom further obtained numerous certifications in investigative services. Tom is also an active member in the In-diana Army National Guard, where he currently holds the rank of Maser Sergeant., and will soon be deployed overseas.

Detective Brian Thurman has served the City of Valparaiso for 27 years, accepting his first appoint-ment as a Probationary Patrolman on February 16, 1992. Brian has held various assignments in the Patrol Division throughout his career and was transferred into the Detective Bureau on January 5, 2010. During his career, Brian was recognized for his outstanding service and was active as an in-structor and Field Training officer. As a Detective, Brian further obtained numerous certifications in investigative services and was recently awarded as the Investigator of the Year in 2018. Brian has accepted a position with Centier Bank as a Corporate Investigator and will assume these duties im-mediately.
