Two patrol officers retire from Valparaiso PD

The Valparaiso Police Department would like to announce the retirement of Patrolman Ronald Chapman and Patrolman Michael Cairns, effective July 31, 2019.

Ronald Chapman has served the City of Valparaiso for over 22 years, accepting his first appointment on March 17, 1997. Ronald was an active member within the department, spending his entire ca-reer within the Patrol Division. During this time, Ronald attained many certifications that aided the department’s firearms and training programs, to include: Certified Indiana Law Enforcement Train-ing Board instructor with a specialty in Firearms, being an armorer for Glock pistols and for AR15 Rifles, an active shooter instructor, and as a rifle operator instructor. Ronald further joined the Por-ter County Emergency Response Team (ERT) in 2012 and was awarded three Honorable Mention awards as a member of the Valparaiso Police Department. Ronald has accepted a position with ArcelorMittal Steel as a shift manager in the Material Handling Department.

Michael Cairns has served the City of Valparaiso for nearly 12 years, accepting his appointment on August 29, 2007. Michael came to Valparaiso, after having served the Town of Chesterton since 1999. Michael spent his entire career in the Patrol Division, where he also served as a Bike Patrol Unit and Breath Test Operator. During his time, Michael was very community minded and spent a great deal of time assisting our local schools and was also awarded an Honorable Mention Award as a member of the Valparaiso Police Department. Michael has accepted a position in sales, with Team Chevrolet of Valparaiso.
