United Way Launches Series of Community Conversations

unitedway-laporteUnited Way of La Porte County is hosting the first in a series of Community Visioning sessions to discuss issues that matter to people and ideas for making the community a better place for all residents. The Community Visioning sessions will be held in Michigan City and La Porte over the next year and a half.

The public is invited to attend the first session on April 2 at the Stardust Event Center in the Blue Chip Casino, Hotel and Spa. A full breakfast will be served at no charge at 7:30 a.m., followed by a guided discussion that ends at 10:30 a.m. The locally televised meeting will include a review of the United Way Community Assessments Summary and roundtable discussions on “Aspirations, Challenges and Change.”

Kris Pate, United Way of La Porte County executive director, says convening the visioning councils is an important step in transforming to an intentional focus on impact in areas of education, income and health. The Unity Foundation, Leadership La Porte County, Purdue University North Central and other organizations are assisting with the process, Pate says.

“United Way is perfectly positioned to be a catalyst within the community that can bring about more intensive change,” she says. “We want to build collaborations in order to accomplish what our community aspires for itself.”

Results of the public meetings will be used to guide the United Way Board of Directors’ future funding process and to inform other community funders, boards and service providers.

“The goal is to hear from as many people as possible,” Pate said.

Those planning to attend on April 2 should make a reservation by Friday, March 28. Reservations can be made by email at info@unitedwaylpc.org or by calling the United Way office at 219-210-3534. The meeting will be videotaped and available for later viewing on the ALCO-TV public access station.
