The United Way of Porter County is seeking volunteers to help elderly, low-to-moderate income Porter County residents file their federal and state income taxes for the 2011 tax year.

Training and testing is done on-line at an IRS website called “Link and Learn”, accessed at www.irs.gov. Volunteers can complete the certifications at their leisure and upon completion will be an official volunteer tax preparer for the IRS. Preparation of 2011 taxes is scheduled to begin at the United Way of Porter County, 951 Eastport Centre Drive, Valparaiso, beginning Jan 23, 2012.

On Thursday, Dec. 15, 10 am to 3 pm, IRS representatives will be at the United Way to explain the training and testing requirements for those who would like to take advantage of this opportunity and printed materials will be available for the VITA volunteers. Please RSVP for this training by contacting George Kuebler, VITA Coordinator, at (219) 464-3583, ext. 128 or email to george@unitedwaypc.org.

Kathy Wojkovich, Director of the United Way Regional Volunteer Center, encourages residents to take advantage of this powerful volunteer opportunity where “you can directly impact lives by providing FREE tax preparations to those who may otherwise not file taxes due to the cost of tax preparation”.

Questions or to RSVP for the VITA training should be directed to George Kuebler, (219) 464-3583, # 128.
