The University of Saint Francis – Crown Point has a simple mission, offer a high-quality education without leaving the Region. USF offers degrees in nursing, liberal studies, applied science, and more in an environment that develops each student’s particular talents while training them for careers in the future.
“We’re proud to offer small class sizes and personalized attention,” said Heidi Wenk-Meltzer, enrollment services specialist at the University of Saint Francis – Crown Point. “It’s a tight, friendly atmosphere. There are no lecture halls and our professors are all Masters’ Prepared, so you won’t find student teachers in the classroom.”
USF specializes in nursing, offering both associate and bachelor degrees in the field. Their nursing program prepares students for leadership roles in a variety of settings, from hospitals to assisted living facilities. Students can take courses online, and participate in a two-month leadership immersion practicum where they work within a healthcare organization for two full semesters.
“We have a lot of involvement with our student nursing association,” Wenk-Meltzer said. “Through that and the practicum, students can build relationships that serve as a network for their future careers.”
Students interested in a laboratory or medical careers outside of nursing can pursue degrees through USF’s laboratory technician and applied science programs. These courses earn students a degree while building a foundation of skills and knowledge with USF’s help.
“We hope to be a community that’s an addition to your family,” Wenk-Meltzer said. “We have a lot of support systems in place for our students. When they walk in the door we know who they are. They know that they can come and talk to us about anything and everything.”
For those still uncertain about their future careers, USF offers a liberal studies program. It offers a complete general education, featuring social and natural sciences, humanities, and math. Students looking to quickly enter the workforce can also take part in course studies to earn qualifications in phlebotomy or as a certified nurse’s aide.
“These programs let them get their foot in the door, and see what nursing is like and if it’s really their calling,” Wenk-Meltzer said. “It can also help them seek employment very quickly and it’s always something to fall back on.”
