Last weekend I experienced an event that transformed my life from the inside out. It literally brought emotions to the forefront of my life and brought back a drive that I had not felt for many years. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tony Robbins, he is the “why guy”. Over the past three decades, Tony Robbins has served as an advisor to leaders around the world. He has a passionate desire to transform the quality of people’s lives through best-selling books, multimedia and health products, public speaking engagements, and live events such as Unleash the Power Within, which is what I attended in Schaumburg this past weekend.
What makes this event so amazing? Why would people come hours before it was scheduled to start and wait in line? I enter the arena, the lights turn down and the dancers hit the stage. Now, they’re not just here for entertainment. No, they’re here to lead you into a peak state so that you’re ready for the incredible intensity of Tony Robbins. These dancers are a group of about twenty people, some women and some men, some wearing comfortable dancing clothes and others wearing suit and tie, Tony gets everyone involved. After what seems to be 30 minutes of clapping, dancing and moving I was energized and ready to get this party started. What a way to start a 4-day “seminar”.
Throughout the next 4 days I was instructed to give massages to people I’d never met, stand for hours, sit for minutes, dance, hug people I’d never met, intentionally act bored, intentionally act ridiculously happy, scream, smile, “shake my ass in my seat”, play air guitar, lay on the freezing concrete for a sort of hypnosis, tell a perfect stranger my deepest problems, celebrate like the Cubs had won the World Series (though that specific request made me laugh a bit), and most importantly walk on 2,000 degree coals.
Tony (along with his #1 Performance Coach, Joseph McClendon III) continuously drives you using movement combined with phenomenal stories, emotional stories, of GOOD. The stories aren’t intended to impress, but to create triggers so that when you see a plane in the sky you think of focus. When you play golf you think of how you’re just 2 millimeters from success, change your approach just 2 millimeters. I’m reminded each and every day that motion creates emotion, that you can tell your mind whatever you want on an intellectual level, but there is nothing that moves you to action like “moving your ass”…triggers…that is what makes it unforgettable.
It is impossible for me to put into words the importance of this event in my life. Instead I simply tell people that if I knew what I was going to get out of it ahead of time I would have paid 10 times as much. The next Unleash the Power Within is going to be held in the New York area from November 7-10. My advice is to go.
If you can’t afford it, GO.
If you can’t find the time, GO.
