Swim Stroke Clinic is ideal for children ages 7 – 14 who need to improve their skills for participation in the competitive environment. The emphasis in this week-long clinic will be to refine swimmers’ stroke techniques. All strokes will be presented, including starts and turns. Participants must be able to swim 25 yards without assistance or assistive device on front (freestyle/front crawl) with rotary breathing and back (backstroke). August 8-12 (10:00-11:00 a.m.). Summer Day Camps at the Valparaiso Family YMCA
Grades K-9: Summer Day Camps for five separate age groups are being offered this summer at the Valparaiso Family YMCA. Camp activities will be held outdoors on Y grounds in our NEW pavilion. The Y facility includes a playground, youth wellness room, swimming pool, and gym. Camps run Monday through Friday from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Campers must bring a sack lunch and drink daily. Ages 3-5: Preschool Summer Enrichment Camp includes weekly themes with crafts, music, snack, socialization, swim lessons and gym time. An alternative monthly preschool is offered, with morning and afternoon sessions held on Tues. and Thurs. for three year olds and Mon., Wed., and Fri. for four to five year olds. Camp is offered at the Y facility (464-9543 x7) as well as BridgePoint Church (462-0040) at 105 N. Washington St. A Pre-K class is also held Mon. – Fri. at BridgePoint.

Valparaiso YMCA to Offer Free Drug Use Education & Prevention Program
The Valparaiso Family YMCA will host a free drug education and drug use prevention program for teens aged 13 – 18 called ‘Too Good for Drugs.’ The fun-filled sessions will start on July 26th and will be facilitated by Victoria and Joe Ubben of BreakAway Performance Group. ’Too Good for Drugs’ includes twelve hours of award-winning and evidence-based education and drug use prevention, along with time in the pool, the gym, and the Youth Wellness Center. The program is free to all participants due to a grant provided in collaboration with Mayor Jon Costas & the Valparaiso Substance Abuse Prevention Committee (VSAPC); Mayor Olga Velazquez & the city of Portage; and, the Strategic Prevention Framework State Incentive Grant (SPFSIG) in Indiana. The prevention grant collaboration is an initiative of Frontline Foundations, Inc. Frontline is a certified and faith-based substance abuse treatment provider located in Porter County.

Annual Maintenance Shutdown
The Valpo Y will close for routine maintenance and annual cleaning at Noon, Aug. 13. The Y will reopen at 5 am, Aug. 22. Members are welcome to enjoy their Y member benefits at local Ys in the area. A list of these locations will be available at our Courtesy Desk.

Lifeguard Certification
Become certified in skills necessary to become a lifeguard. The Lifeguard and Lifeguard Instructor programs run concurrently. Mon./Wed. Sept. 12-Oct 12 6-8:30pm. Ages 15 and up may register for the Lifeguard Certification. Participants in the Lifeguard Instructor Class must be 17 years old, hold a current American Red Cross Lifeguarding/First Aid Certificate, and be able to competently perform all Lifeguard skills. Strength and Conditioning Workshop
Join our monthly workshops where a personal trainer will give advice on strength training technique, use of the Wellness Center equipment, and the importance of form during exercise. Safety and etiquette will also be discussed. This workshop is ideal for beginners or individuals new to the Wellness Center. First Mon. or First Sat. of the month. Free for members. Register at the Wellness Center desk by day prior to workshop.

Summer Zumba Party
Come join the fun in our new Pavillion at the Zumba Party! August 12 from 6 – 8 pm with a $10 entry fee. Registration is not needed.

Meditation Class
Learn about breathing techniques, visualation techniques, and mindfulness practices. All levels of practice are welcome to attend. August 26, 7-8pm. Register on-line or at our Courtesy Desk.

Move It To Lose It
Receive guidance to get meet your fitness goals. 3 hours of training per week for 7 weeks with 30 minutes of lecture, and 60 minutes of circuit training each day. There will be weekly weigh ins, three fitness assessments, nutrition lectures, and a group of people to work with that share your goals! The next session begins Sept.6-October 23. Enroll by 9/5; class size limited.
