From the office of the Neighborhood Liasion

In Valparaiso, residents of the Central neighborhood are forming a Neighborhood Watch, and they’re asking their neighbors to join them. The city’s neighborhood liaison has been working with neighborhood leaders and residents to help them organize the group in partnership with the Valparaiso Police Department.

Central neighborhood boundaries are from Campbell St. to Morgan Blvd. and from the Canadian National Railroad to Jefferson St. Central is one of Valparaiso’s historic downtown neighborhoods, and is the home of several community churches and Central Elementary School.

A Neighborhood Watch is a crime prevention program that enlists the active participation of residents in cooperation with law enforcement to reduce crime, solve problems and improve the quality of life in an area. The program is offered by the Valparaiso Police Department.

At the first meeting, Central residents will meet Community Relations Officer Michael Grennes of the Valparaiso Police Department. He will provide an informative neighborhood crime and safety presentation as well as a question and answer session for residents.

The watch’s first meeting will be on Thursday, June 23, 2011 at 6 p.m. in the police department’s training room. The department is located at 355 S. Washington Street. A second watch meeting will then be organized by the group.
