Valparaiso Family YMCA Provides Expanded Services in Facility Expansion

Valparaiso-Family-YMCA-Provides-Expanded-Services-in-Facility-ExpansionOpening in January of 2017, the Valparaiso Family YMCA will welcome visitors to experience a new 8,500 square foot two-story building addition designed with your health in mind. This expansion is a collaboration of resources from the Valparaiso YMCA and its healthcare partner, St. Mary Medical Center. Both organizations are joined in their commitment to providing services that strengthen our community, mind, body and spirit.

The community is invited to attend a health fair from, Saturday, February 25 at the Valparaiso Family YMCA located at 1201 Cumberland Crossing Drive.

Construction on the addition began in July 2016. YMCA staffers are eager to provide new and improved programs. The two-level building boasts two mind and body studios, a conference room, personal training studio, expanded restroom facilities and St. Mary Medical Center therapy and physical rehabilitation areas.

“Our goal with the addition is to create a seamless spectrum of services we offer to Valparaiso and the surrounding communities,” said St. Mary Medical Center CEO Janice Ryba. “We recognize that each aspect of health and wellness must work in unison - that is why we’ve chosen to expand our partnership with the Valparaiso Family YMCA, working together to treat the body and mind as a whole.”

St. Mary Medical Center will provide the new rehabilitation services in addition to the services already provided by the hospital’s health and wellness nurse, Christy Cleveland, BSN, RN. Currently, community residents and YMCA members have access at the Y for routine health consultations as well as health screenings, informational seminars and a connection to local physicians. The new addition provides areas for expanded services including physical therapy, private treatment rooms and aquatic therapy in the YMCA Leisure Pool.

“We are excited to offer a full spectrum of physical therapy services to the YMCA members and the Valparaiso community,” said John Doherty, MS, PT, ATC, vice president of therapy services for St. Mary Medical Center. “Our ability to now offer aquatic therapy in addition to more traditional treatments will be particularly beneficial to patients overcoming injuries and surgeries that necessitate decreased weight bearing. We look forward to a long partnership with the YMCA that will offer the highest quality of care and benefit to their membership, our patients and the community.”

Another key area to serve the community is the Personal Training Studio. YMCA NASM-certified personal trainers provide the very best in training to clients at all levels of fitness. Setting goals and executing trainings that deliver the desired fitness results focus on achieving long term health benefits. Personal trainers have the opportunity to utilize the new studio and coach clients in a designated space with state-of-the-art equipment.

Second floor sections of the new addition will serve clients of the YMCA with new studios for classes that feed the soul. The Y will increase the number of intentional mind and body classes to 25. Certified staff professionals lead classes in the studio which allows up to 40 participants the opportunity to discover their power and purpose. New studios also feature climate and lighting controlled space and Pilates equipment.
