On the third Friday of every month, Togetherhood volunteers visit residents at Journey Senior Living in Valparaiso, located near the intersection of US 6 and IN 49.

“The residents love the activities and socialization” shared Melissa Green, Executive Director of Journey Senior Living, “It is evening full of fun including playing board games, group sing-a-longs, trivia question competitions and, weather permitting, outdoor activities. Building new friendships is a bonus for everyone. Our residents look forward to every visit.”

Crystal Olympidis, the Togetherhood committee chair, leads a team of dedicated volunteers who also participate in activities throughout the year and often can bring along family members young and old who want to serve.

He never expected to enjoy the evening but discovered he made a difference to the people he met.”

Togetherhood is a YMCA, member-led, volunteer service program. Providing support for people from all backgrounds, addressing real needs in our community, cultural engagement and other special projects are ways the group gives back.

Recently, Togetherhood libraries were built by local craftsmen and decorated by children. The libraries will soon be available for families to take a book, leave a book, or read a book and return it at Will Park, Butterfly Park, and Sunset Hill Park. These and other projects are making a difference in keeping our community vibrant and exciting.

There are so many ways to help make our community better. Togetherhood invites Y members to participate in community service projects that benefit people and organizations right here in our neighborhood. If you are interested in joining the movement, please contact Jodi Jackson at
