Valparaiso Fire Department Launches 2016 Smoke Detector Program

Valparaiso-Fire-Department-Launches-2016-Smoke-Detector-ProgramHaving a working smoke detector reduces your chances of dying in a fire by nearly half, according to the American Red Cross. The Valparaiso Fire Department is out to make sure every house has this lifesaving smoke detector by launching the Out to Alarm Valpo program. Under the program, Valparaiso residents may receive a free smoke detector, including free installation, compliments of Martin Security Systems, Inc. of Valparaiso.

“We don’t want anyone to compromise their fire safety due to financial hardship or the inability to install a smoke detector,” said Jon Daly, Assistant Fire Chief. “We will also have some additional smoke detectors and batteries on the fire trucks that we can install in non emergency cases or make an appointment to return later,” he said.

The VFD currently has a stock of 250 smoke detectors, all donated by Bob Martin of Martin Security. Firefighters and representatives of Martin Security will also install the detectors, at no charge. “Smoke detectors save lives. We saw a need in the community and we’re glad to help,” said Bob Martin, Owner of Valparaiso-based Martin Security Systems, Inc.

“Obviously, people think of calling the fire department in an emergency, but we’re trying to take a more proactive approach with Out to Alarm Valpo and other initiatives like our child safety seat program,” said Fire Chief Chad Dutz. Firefighter Adam Lara initiated the Out to Alarm Valpo and will handle its administration. To receive a free smoke detector, Valparaiso residents may call 219-462-8325.
