Valparaiso High School Drama Club hosts Mocha Madness Improv Show

The Valparaiso High School Drama Club put on their annual Mocha Madness Improv Show Thursday night, continuing a beloved tradition of creative shenanigans on the VHS stage. Director Matt McCann described the format of this year’s improv show.

“It’s called a short form improv show,” McCann said. “Very much akin to the show Whose Line Is It Anyway? We play short games, there are certain rules, and everything is made up on the spot!”

For the improv show, the students were split up into teams. The teams were included A Guinea Pig in a Midlife Crisis, Chuck E. Cheese Revival, Too Close, Future Farmers of America, Simeon’s Backyard Landscaping, and Dairy Alternatives. Junior Macy Highlan, member of A Guinea Pig in a Midlife Crisis, explained how the team came up with their interesting name.

“We honestly just came up with the name by brainstorming with our words like we do on stage, until we just found one that we thought was fitting,” Highlan said.

Junior Dallin Sarver, actor for the team Too Close, commented on his favorite parts about performing in improv shows.

“You always have your teammates to back you up, and improv really helps with life skills,” Sarver said. “Our coach says, ‘This is the most important thing you’ll ever do in high school,’ and it’s true, it really helps build social skills.”

The Drama Club will continue their performances on Friday and Saturday night at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door and face masks are required.
