Valparaiso High School Students Win $10,000 DoSomething.org e-Waste Educational Grant

Do-Something-e-Waste-Drive-VHSDo Something leverages communications technologies to enable young people to convert their ideas and energy into positive action. They inspire, empower and celebrate a generation of doers: young people who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action. This September, Do Something organized a nationwide e-Waste Drive in partnership with Best Buy and ENERGY STAR which encouraged teens to set up e-Waste Recycling Drives in their communities. More than 59,000 pieces of electronic waste were collected through this program; each team was able to gather an average of 300 pieces. The students from Valparaiso High School collected 4,594 pieces of e-Waste.

The top 10 drives across the country were given Best Buy gift cards. The Valparaiso High School Team received a $10,000 educational grant for higher education from Do Something which is split amongst the team members.

We wanted the extend our appreciation to the community for all of your support, whether it be for providing a place for us to hold our drives (Valparaiso High School and Urschel Laboratories for use of the K-Mart Corner Parking Lot), helping us advertise (ValpoLife and NWI Times – Valparaiso), supplying us with the multitude of items to be recycled, or opening up your warehouse for the numerous trips we made to drop off the electronic waste (Best Buy – Valparaiso). We couldn’t have done it without you!
