Valparaiso-Vibrant-VisionaryThe city of Valparaiso, along with Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District, and local partners, are hosting a special summer recycling event to turn up the heat on recycling. The “Green Days” event will be Aug 24, noon to 5 pm and Aug 25, 8 am to noon at the north parking lot of Fairgrounds Park, off McCord St.

The community is invited to bring the following items for recycling:

  • Paper files for confidential shredding and recycling, courtesy of Secure Shred, a division of Opportunity Enterprises (up to 2 bankers boxes per household or business). On site shredding will not be available on Aug. 25.
  • Discarded electronics, including computers, holiday lights, cell phones, microwaves – anything with a plug.
  • Plastic shopping bags -- exchange them for free reusable bags from Town & Country Market, WiseWay Foods, and The City of Valparaiso while supplies last.

In addition, Porter County Recycling and Waste Reduction District will offer home compositing kits for just $15 (including instructions). “We want to encourage the community to learn more and do more as stewards of the environment,” said Mayor Jon Costas. “Valparaiso currently recycles at a higher rate than any other community in Indiana, but we want to do even more to protect our environment for future generations,” he said. The city of Valparaiso is taking a leadership role in recycling and environmental efforts. The city currently diverts more than 55 percent of its waste from landfills through recycling. Valparaiso has embraced other environmentally friendly projects as well, including building pathways, offering public transportation, introducing solar lighting for street signage and incorporating energy efficient materials and equipment.
