Sophomore Grant Inman hurled five solid innings, senior Nate Palace launched his first home run of 2017 and freshman Jon Tieman nailed down his first career save as the Valparaiso University baseball team defeated Western Kentucky 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Nick Denes Field in Bowling Green, Ky. The win marked the first of the season for the Crusaders.

Valpo Bowling Concludes Crusader Classic Sunday
The #23 Valparaiso University bowling team finished out the Crusader Classic from Lakewood Bowl in Richton Park, Ill. on Sunday, splitting a pair of matches in bracket play to finish the tournament in 10th place.

Crusaders Close Out Perfect Opening Weekend Sunday
The Valparaiso University softball team finished up an undefeated weekend of action to open the 2017 season Sunday from the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C., defeating Howard by an 11-4 final. The Crusaders took on Appalachian State following their win over the Bison, but the meeting was declared No Game after being called in the middle of the fifth inning due to a drop-dead time.

Crusaders Suffer Second Straight One-Run Defeat
The late innings haunted the Valparaiso University baseball team for the second consecutive day on Saturday afternoon in Bowling Green, Ky. Western Kentucky followed Friday’s walk-off win with another one-run victory, nipping Valpo 4-3 after snapping a 2-2 tie with two runs in the eighth. Junior college transfer Wes Gordon (Waukegan, Ill. / Warren [Lake County]) turned in a quality start in his Crusader debut, but received no decision.

Crusaders Upend Titans in Wild One at ARC
The Valparaiso University women’s basketball team escaped with an improbable 57-55 win over Detroit Mercy on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics-Recreation Center. The Crusaders avenged a 25-point loss to the Titans from earlier in the season. Amber Lindfors had a double-double while Dani Franklin led the Crusaders (8-19, 3-13 Horizon) with 16 points.

Big Bats Lead Softball To Pair of Wins Saturday
The Valparaiso University softball team improved to 3-0 on the season with a pair of wins at the Aggie Invitational in Greensboro, N.C. on Saturday, taking down UMBC, 5-4, and host North Carolina A&T, 7-2. The Crusaders combined for seven home runs over the two victories, including two in each game from senior Sam Stewart (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East).

Horizon League Releases Preseason Golf Polls
The Horizon League has announced its preseason polls for men’s and women’s golf, as voted upon by the league’s head coaches. The Valpo men are picked to finish fourth in the league standings, while the women are projected for a sixth-place finish.
