“It just brings everyone together and they invite participants to bring a canned good or nonperishable item that go to benefit local families,” Associate Director of Creative Services Kristen Knoerzer said.

With an anticipated crowd of about 500 it took a great deal of Valparaiso University students volunteers to make the night a success. Tiana Sanchez a senior enjoyed working in the cookie decorating room.

“This is just such a fun opportunity to not only volunteer but to get into the holiday spirit,” Sanchez said.

As the sun set and the temperature dropped the race participants got all lined up for the start of the race. Allie Reynolds a junior at VU was excited about the race.

“I am out here with my friends. It may be freezing cold but it is for a good cause and we are having a blast,” Reynolds said.

After the race came to an end everyone gathered around for the lighting of the tree. After a brief welcoming and a countdown the tree was illuminated. Following the lighting of the tree VU, students lead the crowd in Christmas carols while waiting for the firework show to begin.
