Valpo Counseling Services Director Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
Nov. 15, 2019 – Valparaiso, Indiana – Stewart Cooper, Ph.D., director of Counseling Services and professor of psychology at Valparaiso University, has received a lifetime achievement award from the largest organization of campus mental health leaders in the world.
Each year, the Association of University and College Counseling Center (AUCCCD) recognizes member achievements that exemplify excellence in the national promotion of campus mental health. This award recognizes and honors Cooper’s outstanding service to the AUCCCD and exemplary leadership in the field of university counseling and college centers at the highest national levels. Cooper joined Valpo’s faculty in 1987. As director of Counseling Services, he oversees the campus Counseling Center as well as the Alcohol and Drug Education (OADE) and Sexual Assault Awareness & Facilitative Education (SAAFE) offices. He is also a professor within the psychology department with responsibilities primarily with its graduate clinical mental health program. His professional development has followed the scientist/practitioner model of combining teaching, research, and scholarship with clinical practice, as well as the Valpo model of service to society. He currently serves on the Board of Directors of the American Psychological Association.
The author of five books and numerous book chapters and journal articles, Cooper’s research has focused on the application of theoretical and multivariate perspectives and methods to a number of diverse counseling psychology topics. He is widely published in areas such as college mental health services, consultation practice, substance abuse, and ethics.
