When completed, the new western extension of the pathway, starting at Valparaiso High School, will connect 700 homes with the city’s existing 16-mile pathway system.

The project comes at a cost of $1.6 million dollars, including engineering, land acquisition, and construction, and is funded through a federal grant from the Congestion Mitigation and Air Quality Improvement (CMAQ) program and a 20% match from Valparaiso’s Redevelopment Commission.

Valpo Parks Foundation Executive Director, John Seibert, said the groundbreaking is the result of cooperation from a number of partnerships and contributions that exemplified a community working together to improve their city.

“'When working on something like this, significant partnerships and teamwork are required to pull this together,” Seibert told IIMM. “It takes a lot of contributions for something like this to come together and become a reality.”

Seibert added, that when completed, the project stands to make a significant contribution to not only the city’s alternate, environmentally friendly transportation options, but also in the advancement of a healthy and happy community.

"This project stands to promote a safe pathway for everyone, promote a healthy lifestyle, and create a positive environmental impact by offering a means of alternate transportation."

The official groundbreaking is set for May 4 at 1:00 PM.
