city-of-valparaisoThe city of Valparaiso is encouraging more pedestrian-friendly travel by proclaiming the week of May 16 “Bike to Work Week,” announced Mayor Jon Costas. Costas invites the community to get involved by joining him on a bike ride to work on Thurs. May 19. Bicyclers are encouraged to gather in front of the mayor’s house, 2402 Spyglass, at 8:30 am for a ride to City Hall. On the steps of City Hall, the mayor will proclaim Bicycle Week in the city of Valparaiso.

Valparaiso is truly committed to its pathways and creating opportunities for pedestrian-friendly travel. In addition to saving on gas, riding your bike or walking builds fitness and interaction,” said Costas. The city’s first annual Bike to Work week coincides with national Bicycle Month, according to the city’s Pathways Committee, organizers of the local event.

The city’s Pathways Committee serves as an advisory group for the mayor and Parks Department. “We’re fortunate to have more than 10 miles of pathways in our city, with about three more miles to be added this year,” said Jan Dick of the Pathways Committee. “We want everyone to be out there biking and walking this summer,” he said. Other members of the Pathways Committee include Walt Breitinger, Rolando Chilian, Duane Davison, Heather Schwartz, and Chuck Ventura.
