Valpo YMCA Changing Lives Campaign

Jazz-Fest-Tom-Bob-Rob-MattChanging Lives: The Annual Community Assistance Drive of the Valparaiso Family YMCA continues to solicit donations for 2011. The campaign is chaired by Cathy Greenawald. Each year, funds are raised to ensure that every individual has access to the essentials needed to learn, grow and thrive at the Y. This year’s goal of $175,000 reflects the growing need for serving low income individuals and families. “For several years, the Y has been giving $2 back to the community for ever dollar that is raised through this campaign. As the need in our community increases, so too does our goal for raising funds,” said Bob Wanek, CEO.

The annual plant and flower sale at Samuelson’s Nursery will be held the weekend of May 14 and 15. Proceeds will benefit the Changing Lives campaign. The Chairman’s Roundtable banner program recognizes those individuals, businesses and organizations who contribute $1000 or more towards the campaign.

The annual campaign was formerly called “Strong Kids.” In keeping with the Y movement’s new branding initiative and subsequent aim of changing the lives of all people, the campaign name was aptly changed to Changing Lives: The Annual Community Assistance Drive.

The campaign kicked off with a Call-a-Thon held in February at Thorgren Tool and Molding. The Changing Lives campaign volunteers made phone calls to donors that evening to solicit pledges to the campaign. Y staff members were on hand to assist and to rally callers with a comedic skit. “Our campaigners include board members, employees, and other friends of the Y who volunteer their time to talk to people about the Y’s Mission and all we do for our community. Without the tireless efforts of our volunteers, this campaign would not exist,” said Debra Koeppen, Financial Development Director.

In addition to the direct ask portion of the campaign, the sixth annual Valpo Jazz and Blues Fest was held last month. In spite of other fundraiser events being the same night in the community, over 300 people attended the Y event, which included music, dancing, hors d’oeuvres, and a silent auction. More than $35,000 was raised.

At the Y, all employees have been encouraged to find some way to contribute towards the campaign, whether by actively soliciting pledges, volunteering at events, or donating directly to the campaign. So far, a competition between departments has raised a record total of $8,333, surpassing last year’s record total of $5,975. “This is a testimony to the dedication of our staff and volunteers who tirelessly walk the talk of the Mission of their Y,” said Koeppen.

In keeping with the Y Mission, no one is turned away due to inability to pay. In 2010, almost $290,000 in financial assistance was provided to low income families, individuals with disabilities, and human service agencies. More than 1,000 people enjoy the same benefits as all members of the Y. This amount is expected to be greatly exceeded in 2011. Pledges of all sizes are greatly appreciated and may be made by contacting Koeppen at 462-4185 ext. 229. Individuals, companies, or organizations who may be interested in learning about joining campaign events and fundraising efforts for 2011, including the banner program, are encouraged to contact Koeppen as well.
