Valpo’s Tom Cavanaugh, Air One Photography Featured as Member Spotlight in Club Views Newsletter

On the front cover of our Club Views newsletter we have featured one of the numerous aerial and ground photographs taken by Tom Cavanaugh and his son Brad. Tom and his wife, Arlene, have been golf members of Bonita Bay Club for 12 years. He so eloquently said the reason he moved to Bonita Bay because, “I like the people, the Club and the location, and if you love golf it’s the only place to be.”

They made the big move to Florida from Valparaiso, Indiana where they raised five children and are the proud grandparents of 17 grandchildren. Valparaiso is located 35 miles southeast of downtown Chicago in Northwest Indiana.

Dr. Cavanaugh has been an orthodontist for 50 years. His son Rob has currently taken over the practice. He still works in his office when he is on vacation. In Mr. Cavanaugh’s own words, “Orthodontics is a very gratifying specialty.”

Dr. Cavanaugh’s passion for photography and flying started back in the 1950’s. With his son Brad’s help, he was able to take those passions and make it into a business. AirOne Photography started in 1992 taking breathtaking photographs of the Chicago skyline. They are also well known in the area for their photographs of Wrigley Field, Soldier’s Field, Sox Park, boat races, special events, and golf courses. They started taking pictures in airplanes but decided to purchase a Robinson R44 helicopter, and are able to be on location on a moment’s notice. They fly helicopters and airplanes in their business; however, there are fewer restrictions for the helicopter than an airplane. They generally use the Hasselblad H4D 50 mega pixel camera on a gyrostabilizer, and they have had to opportunity to travel the United States taking photos with this camera. One of the most memorable was photographing the lighthouses of Maine.

He’s had the pleasure of teaching both of his sons how to fly, and is now having fun introducing some of his grandchildren to aviation…”Flying is my son’s profession, but for me it’s just a good time.”

The Club is very grateful to Dr. Cavanaugh for taking hundreds of new aerial pictures of our courses and clubhouse sometimes just the cost of renting the helicopter, saving the membership thousands of dollars. Many of theses spectacular photos will be featured in new membership information and promotional material.
