VCS Board Selects Dr. Jim McCall as New Superintendent

The Valparaiso Community Schools Board of Trustees met on Friday, September 25, 2020 for a special meeting where they approved the appointment of Dr. Jim McCall to lead Valparaiso Community Schools as superintendent.

“As an active member of the Valparaiso Community and integral part of Valparaiso Community Schools, Dr. McCall brings the experience and vision needed to lead the district,” said School Board President Susan Hoffman. “We are thrilled to have him at the helm.”

Dr. McCall has served as the assistant superintendent of Valparaiso Community Schools since 2015, and is currently in his 22nd year as a public school educator in Valparaiso having began his career as an English teacher and coach at VHS in 1999. Before joining the district administrative team, he served as an associate principal at Valparaiso High School and principal at Flint Lake Elementary. As the assistant superintendent, Dr. McCall has been involved in all aspects of district operations including teaching and learning, programming, human resources, finance, and essential services.

Dr. McCall received his undergraduate degree in English from Wabash College and a Master’s Degree in English from Purdue University. He went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Ball State University. Dr. McCall completed his doctoral work in Educational Leadership at Purdue University.

The Valparaiso community is passionate, generous, and a valued partner of our schools,” said Dr. McCall. “I am looking forward to working with the Board, educators, and the community in this capacity to advance the district’s student-centered vision by supporting student and community growth.”

In addition to his career as an educator, he is an active member of the Valparaiso community and serves on the board of the Valpo Parks Foundation. He is a lifelong resident of Northwest Indiana. He and his wife, Leslie, have two children who attend Valparaiso High School.

The Indiana School Board Association received 16 applications for the Valparaiso Community Schools superintendent job posting. The VCS Board of Trustees identified top candidates after receiving input from the Superintendent Search Advisory Committee and the community. The Board announced Dr. Jim McCall as the selection for the superintendent position during a special meeting on September 25. McCall will assume Valparaiso Community Schools superintendent duties immediately.
