Veterans Day Observance in Valparaiso on November 9

New-Valpo-Park-Logo-ColorThe City of Valparaiso and the Valparaiso Parks Foundation invite the public to a Veterans Day observance at the Service Memorial located at Foundation Meadows Park. It will be held on Friday, Nov. 9, 2012 at 11:00 a.m.

The ceremony will include the presentation of the colors by the Vietnam Veterans Chapter 905 of Porter County. Valparaiso High School Senior and President of the Speech and Debate Club Sarah Simon will recite Abraham Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address.

Mayor Jon Costas will offer reflections on behalf of a grateful community for veterans’ sacrifices. The names of the community members inscribed on the Duty & Sacrifice Wall of the Service Memorial who gave the ultimate sacrifice by giving their lives in the line of duty from WWI through the War in Afghanistan will be read aloud by veterans Jim Spanopoulos, Rick Staresina, and Spiro Olympidis.

Special guests SFC Kirk Brownson and SSG Kyle Leonard of Headquarters 113th Engineer Battalion, active military assigned to the 713th Engineer Company of the Army National Guard based in Valparaiso who recently returned from deployment in Afghanistan, will recognize the six fellow guardsmen who gave their lives during that deployment.

Former World War II Navy chaplain and retired United Methodist Church pastor John Wolf will offer the benediction.
