The Valparaiso High School girls’ tennis team started the season off strong by winning their first two matches, against Kankakee Valley and Hobart on April 3 and 4, respectively.
Against the Kougars of Kankakee Valley, the varsity squad won two of the three singles matches with the Vikings’ Caitlin Kenney defeating Kaylyn Banaszak 6-0, 6-0 and Rachel Willing taking down KV’s Jennifer Anderson 60, 6-1. Valpo’s Kelly Kennedy fell to Abbey Hanstra 6-3, 6-3.
In doubles action, the Vikings swept KV, with Sonja Schaefer and Marissa Weston defeating Hayley Hoffman and Alexis Howard 7-6 (3), 6-2, followed by Ava Meyer and Brooke Sever beating Maranda Brown and Amanda Detolf 6-0, 6-0.
The JV Viking squad defeated Kankakee 8-2.
Against Hobart, the Vikings fared even better, sweeping the Brickies 5-0. In singles play, Kelly Kennedy (6-0), Caitlin Kennedy (6-0), and Rachel Willing (6-1) all won their respective matches. In doubles play, the teams of Sonja Schaefer and Kate Spencer (6-2, 6-1) and Ava Meyer and Brooke Sever (6-1, 6-0) also emerged victorious.
The JV team also won by a score of 7-3.
