VHS Gymnastics’ Team Wins Unprecedented Fourth Straight State Championship

VHS gymnastics’ team wins unprecedented fourth straight state championship

Our VHS gymnastics team won its fourth straight state championship last Saturday at Ball State University. What an incredible feat for Coach Lorie Cook, who has now won nine state championships in her career, the most by any coach in her sport. In addition to her state championships, Coach Cook has had four team runner-up finishes in the state finals. In total, Coach Cook’s teams have made 18 state finals’ appearances. Coach Cook’s longtime Assistant Coach Becky Juergens, and volunteer assistants Angie Moon and Jill DiGiorgio have also been instrumental in the program’s success.

Great programs not only take great coaches but also great athletes. VHS has had 10 all-around state champions. All-around represents those individuals who compete in all four events, i.e., floor, beam, bars, and vault. On Saturday, junior Steffanie Long won the all-around state championship, while sophomore Morgan Algozine finished third. Four individuals compete in each event. On bars, Morgan was the state champion, while Steffanie finished in a 4th place tie. Junior Alexandra Lazerwitz was 16th and sophomore Hannah Erwin placed 32nd. On vault, Steffanie was the state champion, while Morgan finished second. Senior Kaitlyn Neis was 16th and junior Allyson Kraft was 19th. On the floor exercise, Steffanie was the state champion, while Morgan finished second. Allyson was 17th and sophomore Emily Crosmer was 24th. In the beam event, Steffanie finished 9th, Allyson finished 22nd, Morgan finished 25th, and Alexandra finished 33rd.

VHS gymnastics enjoys a strong fan following that was also dominant last Saturday at Ball State.

Congratulations to our gymnasts and coaching staff. Our school system and community are proud of your accomplishment!

VCS News

The VHS commencement has been moved from Thursday, June 9 to Friday, June 10. The decision to move the date was difficult because of the inconvenience caused for some of our families; however, it was necessary because VHS staff needs time to assure all students complete graduation requirements.

Have a safe and enjoyable Spring Break next week!
