VHS Soccer Fest: Soccer For Peace

Valparaiso High School held their annual International Club Soccer Tournament on October 19, 2011. Due the weather conditions, the tournament was held in the Valparaiso Field House instead of the usual place at the west side of Ogden Gardens.  About 300 student took part in this celebration for Language Week.

This is the 15th year the Valparaiso High School Language Department has hosted this event to bring all the different languages together to celebrate.  Since soccer is well-known in each country represented, it made the obvious choice of the best sport for the students play for a tournament.

Chris Waters, who is a Spanish teacher at Valparaiso High School, has been organizing the Soccer Fest each year and still enjoys it.  She stated, "As part of the world language faculty, I'm thrilled to facilitate this event. In a world that's anything but peaceful, we focus on soccer for peace which is always the theme for this week's celebration."

The German's were the proud owners of last year's trophy, but they had to give it up to Senora Gadacz's Spanish 2 and 3 Pre IB class. The two teams came headed against each other during the last game of the winners bracket, but the German's fell short at the very end of the game.

Each year the International Clubs have a contest for the students to design the t-shirts for the tournament. The student that wins gets their art work put on all the t-shirts. The cost for each student to participate is $10. This money pays for their team's t-shirt, and the remaining money this year will be going into Bryon Duncan's Medical Fund. Bryon Duncan is a student at Valparaiso High School.

You cannot have a celebration without food!  The chef and owner of Don Quijote Restaurant, Carlos Rivero, was so generous to have donated enough paella for everyone to enjoy after the tournament.
