VHS Volleyball Team Continues Hot Start with Win Over Merrillville

The Valparaiso High School girls’ volleyball program continued its hot start to the 2011 season with the varsity, junior varsity, and freshman teams all recording victories over the Merrillville Pirates on Thursday, September 1st.

The varsity team came away with a win in four games, 25-16, 25-8, 20-25, 25-17. Kelsie Schutz led the Vikings with 11 kills, followed by Brigid Scannell’s 10 kills and eight digs. Tarrah Lasky added 26 assists to the winning effort, along side Kate Workman’s 22 digs. Carrie Clark contributed 17 digs and nine assists as well.

The junior varsity team won in two games and improved their Duneland Athletic Conference record to 3-0, while their overall record jumped to 10-1 to start the year. Sophomore Anna Walls led the Vikings with six kills, while sophomore Kathy Minko added in four of her own. Maddie Chayhitz came up with seven assists for VHS .

The Valpo freshman squad also pulled ahead of Merrillville in two games, winning 25-10 and 25-12. Liz Rivich led the freshman Viking team with six kills, followed by Tina Matavulj’s five kills. Matavulj also put up five service aces along with Julia Dalton, who also tallied seven assists.
