Viking-Sports-Report-April-13-21-2018In the first tennis match of the spring, the girls’ team defeated Culver Academy on Tuesday 4-1. Alexis Orlich, AK Flude, and Julie Wappel all one their singles matches and Ema Gillian and Keeley Evans won their doubles match. The JV defeated Culver 9-2.

The girls’ varsity softball team lost to Chesterton on Tuesday night 11-3. Peyton Zahm had two hits and an RBI. They lost to Lake Central on Wednesday 9-3. Peyton Zahm had two hits including a home run and two RBI's. On Thursday, they were defeated by LaPorte 8-1. Maya Seifert had two hits, Peyton Zahm had the hit that accounted for our run.

The JV softball team lost 12-2 against Chesterton. Michaela Nagy had a stand up triple with one RBI and Anna Senese had the other RBI. On Wednesday they were defeated 11-0 by Lake Central. Brandi Hanaway went 2 for 2 with a single and a double. She also had a stolen base. They captured their first win against LaPorte last night 12 to 8. Brandi Hanaway went 3 for 5 with a double and two singles. Brandi had 3 RBI’s on the night. Maddy Wills went 2 for 5 with two doubles. Michaela Nagy also went 2 for 5. Both getting 1 RBI each.

The boys’ track team defeated Portage 70-62 and Lake Central 69-63 on Tuesday night. Freshman Brett Otterbacher won the 400 m Dash by 2 seconds. The Vikings won two out of the three relays against both Indians teams, and the JV 4x800 m Relay team finished before both Indians teams. Coach Crague's distance crew routed Portage 31-1 in the distance events. Reece Staples and Jarred Craft both letter in the throws with quality tosses in the shot put and discus respectively.

The JV baseball team is now 4-0 after a 9-7 victory over the LaPorte Slicers. Reed Haller picked up win number two in relief of John Mudd, who started the game. Spencer Reed earned his first save. The offensive attack was once again led by Ty Gill with three hits. Terry Busse added two hits and three RBI. They beat the Slicers 7-0 on Wednesday. Grant Comstock was dominant on the mound (6 IP 0 R 2 H 7 K). Max Bukur had a pair of hits and 2 RBI. Ty Gill added a solo HR. They beat Michigan City 13-3 in 5 innings on Thursday. Ty Gill, Terry Busse, and Evan Tharp led the offensive attack. Tharp ended the game with a walk off hit in the 5th. Gill pitched 3 innings and earned the win. The Vikings are now 5-0. Fly the W!

The freshmen baseball team beat Lowell 16-8 on Tuesday. Cooper Jones started the game, Ryoma Yamawaki pitched for 2 innings and struck out 5, and then Matt Levenda pitched the last 3 innings and closed out the victory. They beat Lowell 8-2 on Wednesday. They racked up 13 hits including a double from Cooper Jones and Nick Koprcina. Pitching was Jacob Nightingale with 9 K’s in 4 innings, Elan Reid with 6 Ks in 2 innings, and Kyle Lawrence closed it out.

On Tuesday, the girls’ Track and Field team began their season with a cold and blustery first meet on the VHS track. In an excellent opener, the Lady Vikes defeated Portage 105 to 27, and lost by an eyelash (67- 65) to perennial power Lake Central. Top point scorers were the relays (4 x 800 of Bridget McGrath, Hannah Shepherd, Logan Ferngren, and Ava Gilliana), (4 x 400 of McGrath, Gilliana, Bella Grisafi, and Kylie Ireland), (4 x 100 of Brittney Clark, Taylor Phillips, Precious Harvey, and Katelin Buckmaster). Overall first place individual winners were Ava Gilliana-1600, Bridget McGrath-800, Logan Ferngren-3200, Brittney Clark-high jump, and Madison Ochs-shot put and discus. Other individual point scorers were Precious Harvey, Adrianna McFadden, Kellee Davidson, Sarah Worthington, Kylie Ireland, Emily Worthington, Bella Grisafi, Grace Bonczyk, Emma Pollitt, Jordan Coplan, Hannah Lopez, Alyssa Ido, and Hannah Falk. Great work ladies! Next meet is at home on Tuesday, April 17th.
