Visclosky Addresses Citizens in Town Forum

Congressman Pete Visclosky held a town forum in Valparaiso to discuss topics that many American citizens are concerned about, with the main focus being on jobs.

The special privilege of introducing the Congressman was given to an eighth grade Benjamin Franklin Middle School student, Dominic Davis. Davis said of the special opportunity, “My principle (Principle Chris Fields) called me out of class to ask if I would be interested in the opportunity and I said ‘Yes’!”

Introducing the Congressman, Davis said Visclosky would, “Put aside party issues and get things done.” Congressman Visclosky explained that this privilege was given to Dominic because of his academic achievements.

Before the Congressman began the forum, he honored the four Indiana National Guard Soldiers killed in action this past week, (Spc. Brian J. Leonhardt of Merrillville, Spc. Christopher A. Patterson, a Valparaiso University student from Aurora, IL, Spc. Robert J. Tauteris Jr. of Hamlet, and Staff Sgt. Jonathan M. Metzger of Indianapolis, ) with a moment of silence.

Visclosky pointed out that 15% of Americans are underemployed or unemployed. Though in the State of Indiana the unemployment rate has dropped some from 9.4% to 8.5%, he said that those percentages do not include those underemployed.

“We can start [economic recovery] by rebuilding our infrastructure in America, our roads, railroads, and airports. Rebuilding America’s own infrastructure will help create jobs for Americans.”

When opened up to discussion, one of the main questions regarded the top three items of the agendas for this year.  Visclosky answered, “Jobs and that’s it! People need to work and we need to reinvest in this nation and get it going!”

Many issues were discussed in the forum; healthcare, social security, budget, the countries deficit and more. To find out more of what Visclosky plans while serving in Congress, go to his website at www.house.gov/visclosky.
