Walk in the Park is Good for the Mind and Body

Fairgrounds Park- Valpo’s own little respite in the heart of the hustle and bustle of a busy city.

It doesn’t take many steps to get off the beaten path and tune out for awhile, I am happy to say, after a quick but restoring walk over at Fairgrounds Park.

Needing to get some ya-ya’s out in the middle of the day, blow off a little stress, and breathe in a little fresh air, I popped on the headphones, walked out of our office and headed over to the Park.

As many years as I have been coming to Valpo, and now living here the past five, it is something I had not previously taken the time to do. Walking in at the entrance on the corner of Calumet and Evans, you’re immediately greeted by a big mass of color in the garden, and it was maintenance day so crews were there tending the flowers, mowing the grass, and keeping the whole place looking great.

The walking path, as the sign by the playground says, is ¾ mile for every lap, and a cruise around takes you around the ball fields, shaded long stretches on both sides, and they even have some nice tucked away spots to rest, read a book or enjoy your lunch.

First time enjoying the park after a long time away from regular exercise and I was able to enjoy a couple nice laps around. I’d like to make it a regular get away to take advantage of the park year round. Come out and join me at lunch time if you’d like. I’ll be the guy singing to myself, hoping to add a couple laps each time I go.
