Washington Township Elementary News: Christmas Program, Angel Tree, Recess, and Geography Bee

ANNUAL CHRISTMAS PROGRAM IMPLEMENTS CHANGES FOR A GREAT SHOW

Because of growth in the school we have split up the Christmas and Spring Musical Programs. This year, Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th Grade students performed in the Christmas program, 1st Grade, 3rd Grade, and 5th Grade will perform in the Spring program. This helped alleviate the overcrowded gym and helped to reduce the length of the program for the younger children and busy families. WTS Live! will continue to perform at both programs.

ANGEL TREE GIVING/ CANNED GOODS

Thank you for the donations of money and non-perishables for our Angel Tree families. This year we helped 79 students from 33 families.

NEW INDOOR RECESS TEMP CHANGE

To be consistent across the corporation, our wind chill temperature for staying inside will now be 15 degrees (was 10 degrees). If the temperature is close to that please dress your child appropriately in case we go out.

GEOGRAPHY BEE

Our school's championship National Geographic Bee for grades 4 & 5 will be held in the Large Group Room Tuesday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. Classroom winners are: Jordan Sheets 4B, Ethan Martinez 4C, Matthew Sears 4U, Ben Stewart 5K, Haynen Johnson 5R, & Anna Penwitt 5Z. Congratulations and good luck!

CHINESE CLUB

Forms have been mailed for Chinese Club for the new year. We're offering Chinese II for those who had Chinese I this fall, but are also offering Chinese I again for anyone who missed the opportunity in the fall. We're also extending the time to 15 weeks instead of 12 weeks. These classes are all taught by VU students from China and are sponsored by the Confucius Institute at Vl I. If you did not get the for via email there are extras in the elementary office.

COATS FOR FAMILIES OF UNEMPLOYED

Coats are available for distribution for children whose parents are on unemployment. Coats will be distributed on a first come, first served basis by Housing Opportunities in Valparaiso. Any family in Porter county with young children in need of winter garments, whose primary wage-earner was laid off and is currently on unemployment, should immediately contact this agency. Parents requesting coats for children must pre-register by calling Housing Opportunities at 219-548-2800 ext.206. Parents will be required to show a current unemployment check stub and either a birth certificate / or a food stamp printout to show ages of children receiving coats. 1,100 new children's winter coats have been made available through the generous donation of Attorney Kenneth J. Allen, and wife, Nina.
