High school. What do those words bring to your mind? The cheerleaders, the jocks, the academics. The homecoming queen even. But, what about a pageant devoted to finding the most upstanding guy in a high school senior class? Well, you just walked into Boone Grove High School where they have their annual Mr. Boone Grove competition every year in the spring.

This year, ten fierce competitors filled the cast for the contest. All seniors obviously, they were (listed in no particular order) Matthew Jerome Falkowski, Jacob Knecht, Andrew Steven Miller, Kevin Allen Kessler, Michael Hartwig, David Jason Foster II, Daniel Hartwig, Jordan Rich, Shaun Taber, and Greg Wilkins. The categories the guys were judged on were beachwear, personal talents, formal wear, and a Question and Answer session with the top 5 contestants.

Meant to be merely entertainment, all ten guys took the contest really serious. For the talent category, one fellow sang “The Times They Are a Changing” by Bob Dylan with voice and accompanied kazoo. For formal wear, someone was dressed as a banana. And to steer away any misconceptions about BGHS men, one guy, outfitted in full-body black spandex hilariously danced away to Beyonce’s “Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)”. (That’s when I realized I wish I brought VL’s video camera.)

All in all, it was a fun evening for students, faculty, and staff that packed out the gymnasium at Boone Grove. Melissa Wilke, a junior at Boone Grove explained, “It’s probably the biggest event during the school year besides the school dances.” A co-sponsor for the event, Mr. Snow, who also teaches science at BGHS, stated also that all the money that is collected at the event is donated to charity. “Last year, we raised $800,” he said. Wilke also said, “The boys get really close with working on the event together .” Memories are formed, money is raised for charity, and fun was had by all.

So, congratulations to those ten brave men who gave it all to win the BGHS crown.mr-bghs Even though only one person won, you are still men with valor and honor (especially the guy jiving with Beyonce!). High school is a glorious thing. But, you’ll be leaving knowing that you made a solid, positive impact on that place for the past 4 years. So, don’t cry. Instead, embrace the memories, experiences, and challenges and let them form who you are as you move into the future. May God bless the Mr. BGHS competitors and the rest of the 2010 Boone Grove High School senior class!

Also, congratulations to Andrew Miller for taking the 2010 Mr. BGHS crown!
