Women’s Golf improves in Round 2 of MVC Fall Preview

Senior Kayla Krueger (Spring Lake, Mich. / Spring Lake) led the way for the Valparaiso University women’s golf team over the first two rounds of the MVC Fall Preview, which took place on Monday at Spirit Hollow Golf Course in Burlington, Iowa. The teams battled through wet course conditions throughout the rounds.

How It Happened

  • Krueger carded a 78 in Round 2 to post a 158 for the event. That score puts her in a tie for 17th in the 96-player field.
  • Sophomore Payton Hodson (Middleton, Wis. / Middleton) made a significant improvement from Round 1 to Round 2, trimming 11 strokes off her score. After opening with an 87, she improved to a 76 to finish the day tied for 43rd at 163.
  • Senior Tiffany Curtis (Crown Point, Ind. / Crown Point) was third on the team on the opening day of action in Iowa, carding a 167. She improved by two strokes from Round 1 to Round 2, completing the day at t-61.
  • Valpo finished in 14th of 15 teams with a team score of 659. All five golfers improved their scores from Round 1 to Round 2 as the team dropped from 341 to 318. Valpo is five strokes behind Evansville and within eight strokes of an 11th-place tie between Omaha and Western Illinois.

Thoughts from Head Coach Jill McCoy

“Without being able to play a practice round due to weather, we didn’t have a good feel for the golf course this morning. The course was still really wet, which also made the morning round tough. Kayla fought through those conditions to lead the team in the opening round. This afternoon, the course dried out and everyone improved. Payton’s great second round can be attributed to her successful putting. She only had 25 putts for her second 18. Kayla stayed consistent and fought her way through some tough shots in Round 2. I think the team still has a lot of room for improvement and can post some good scores tomorrow as well.”
