The Valparaiso University women’s tennis team won four of its six matches, sweeping the top four singles spots on Sunday at the Cougar Invitational. Valpo didn’t drop a set in any of the victories, sustaining a successful start to the fall season under first-year head coach Bob Modesto. This weekend’s event was hosted by Chicago State and utilized a hidden duals format.
How It Happened
- Junior Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) won the opening set 6-2 over Cardinal Stritch’s Lisa Keller, then took the match by retirement.
- Freshman Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over a Cardinal Stritch player at No. 2 singles.
- Freshman Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) also picked up a victory, topping her Cardinal Stritch opponent 6-4, 6-2 at third singles.
- In the fourth singles match, sophomore Isabella Schoolcraft (Bargersville, Ind. / Center Grove) rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
- The final two singles matches were against opponents from the University of Chicago and were won by the Maroons.
- Claire Czerwonka registered the 30th singles win of her career and her fifth of the season. Olivia Czerwonka and Tabanera also have five singles wins apiece on the young year.
