Women’s Tennis continues winning ways at Chicago State

The Valparaiso University women’s tennis team won four of its six matches, sweeping the top four singles spots on Sunday at the Cougar Invitational. Valpo didn’t drop a set in any of the victories, sustaining a successful start to the fall season under first-year head coach Bob Modesto. This weekend’s event was hosted by Chicago State and utilized a hidden duals format.

How It Happened

  • Junior Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) won the opening set 6-2 over Cardinal Stritch’s Lisa Keller, then took the match by retirement.
  • Freshman Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) cruised to a 6-1, 6-2 victory over a Cardinal Stritch player at No. 2 singles.
  • Freshman Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) also picked up a victory, topping her Cardinal Stritch opponent 6-4, 6-2 at third singles.
  • In the fourth singles match, sophomore Isabella Schoolcraft (Bargersville, Ind. / Center Grove) rolled to a 6-2, 6-0 victory.
  • The final two singles matches were against opponents from the University of Chicago and were won by the Maroons.
  • Claire Czerwonka registered the 30th singles win of her career and her fifth of the season. Olivia Czerwonka and Tabanera also have five singles wins apiece on the young year.
