WWJGD or What Would Jon Groth Do?

This morning I was driving to an early lunch at Blackbird Café with Jon Groth, who happens to be one of my favorite guys in Valpo for about a billion reasons. jon-groth Mostly just because he's always nice and helpful no matter what he has going on, and busier than heck most of the time because he is involved in so many different things in the community, but still always kind and patient.

So on my way to lunch I was about to turn right off of Washington Street onto Indiana and I came across Eloise Gresch (I might have butchered that because I have such a terrible memory I can't remember much of anything longer than a minute and a half).

When I saw her on the Von Tobel's side of the corner, she was waiting across the street, and as I was behind a couple cars at the stop sign, there had to be a good 8 or 10 cars that could have let her cross but didn't, and she wasn't pushing it either. I was thinking to myself "I'm already running late like I always am and I'm going to meet Jon Groth who I really like so I really shouldn't be late for," and was about to justify in my mind why I should make a quick right turn before she started to cross.

Then for no particular reason other than luck I said to myself, "Man, what would Jon Groth do?" And I responded to myself as I like to do inside my head, "Well, he'd choose to be late for lunch most likely number 1. He would also probably be on time, unlike me, in the first place, but if he was in the situation of running late, he'd choose to be late for lunch.

So I let her pass, jumped out of the car, introduced myself to her, asked her if I could take her picture, and thanked her for reminding me to slow down and think about something beyond what I am most likely running late for. She is a sweet little lady, and she was not sure how she was going to stop and get across, and it was a great opportunity for me to remember to slow down, and mostly just a fun little break in the rat race of my day. I had a great start to the day today, seeing and meeting her made it better, and then what is not to like about talking to Jon Groth. eloise

So next time you are at the stop sign or stop light or you are running through the grocery store wondering why will they just not move faster because I am running late for........ whatever, just think WWJGD or What Would Jon Groth Do ?

Thanks Eloise and Jon for helping to make a Monday pretty cool.
