Byron Smith III Sports Complex Dedication

Event Information

On Thursday, May 8, Valpo Parks will be hosting the Byron Smith III Sports Complex Dedication at Fairgrounds Park in Valparaiso.

Byron Smith III (1948-2024) served the Valpo Parks Department with unwavering dedication for more than 40 years as a softball umpire. His calm yet firm officiating style and dry sense of humor were appreciated by players and fellow umpires alike over the course of more than 10,000 games that he officiated.

In recognition of Byron's dedication and passion for the game, the newly renovated diamond fields at Fairgrounds Park will be proudly renamed the Byron Smith III Sports Complex at Fairgrounds Park.

A dedication ceremony will be held to officially rename the complex the Byron Smith III Sports Complex. The ceremony will begin at 5 p.m. and take place at the north entrance to the ballfields. The event is open to the public for all to attend.
