American Hero -Charles Elmer Doolin (1903-1959)
At the height of the Great Depression in 1932, C.E. Doolin was looking to add a salty snack to his small convection company's repertoire. He came across a corn chip product being sold in a café in San Antonio Texas. After sampling the chips, he saw so much potential in the snack that he purchased the original recipe along with 19 retail accounts for $100 (rumored to be borrowed from his mother). Doolin's vision was to sell the corn chips as a side snack to compliment a meal. He perfected the recipe and began to manufacture chips in his mother's kitchen and started to sell "Fritos" Corn Chips from his Model T Ford. Initially they produced about 10 pounds per day and sold bags for 5 cents each. His product became very popular and through his innovative business techniques his company grew to multiple manufacturing locations incorporating Henry Ford's idea of an assembly line and conveyor belt to the manufacturing process. Doolin known as an entrepreneur, businessman, inventor, farmer and board member, had a reputation for fairness and generosity toward all his employees often referring to them as the "Frito-Family". By the time of his death in 1959, his business had gone global and he partnered with Herman Lay, creating the Frito-Lay Corporation. Today Frito-Lay brands employs about 48,000 people and offers many products including Doritos and Cheetos accounting for about 60% of the US snack chip industry...
