South Shore Orchestra Kicks Off 2015 Season with “Tango Fusion” Lunchtime Chamber Series Concert at Memorial Opera House

On Wednesday, April 15, 2015, members of the South Shore Orchestra will perform a colorful assortment of South American tango and Middle Eastern music for the orchestra’s first Lunchtime Chamber Series concert at the Memorial Opera House. The “Tango Fusion” program will include music by Piazzolla, Hovhaness, Cirque du Soleil and more. Embracing the “fusion” theme, the concert will have an interesting twist by featuring exotic instruments such as the Chinese erhu and the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument) in place of traditional Western orchestral instruments for some of the pieces.

"I have programmed a lot of tango and South American music with the SSO before,” said Music Director and Conductor Troy Webdell, “but by using the passionate and haunting sound of the Chinese erhu, as well as, the versatility of the EWI (Electronic Wind Instrument), it brings a completely different and unique approach to making the music come alive.” “Tango Fusion” is a concert not to be missed.

This is the first year that the South Shore Orchestra is the orchestra-in-residence at the Memorial Opera House. The Lunchtime Chamber Series concerts are 45 – 60 minutes in length and showcase different musical styles and ensembles in a chamber music setting. The SSO will be performing five Lunchtime Chamber Series concerts, as well as, four full-orchestra concerts for its 2015 season.
