The Valparaiso High School girls swimming team earned a 139-43 victory over visiting Highland in their season opener Thursday night at the VHS Natatorium.
The Vikings won nearly all varsity events, including both the 400 and 200 meter free relays.
In the 400, it was the VHS team of Annie Rastovski, Marisa Johnson, Maddie Simac and Erin Delahunty finishing first with a time of 4 minutes, 31.30 seconds. Simac and Delahunty were joined by Allison Drever and Liz Schlichting in winning the 200 meter relay in a time of 2 minutes, 1.59 seconds.
Rastovski, Johnson, Drever and Schlichting teamed for another win in the 200 meter medlay relay, coming in first with a time of 2 minutes, 15.84 seconds.
The closest individual finish of the night came between a pair of VHS swimmers as well. Rastovski narrowly edged Delahunty for the top spot in the 200 meter free, posting a time of 2 minutes, 20.63 seconds. That was just enough to get by her teammate, who had a time of 2 minutes, 20.90 seconds.
Other events VHS won included the 200 meter IM (Simac, 2:44.94), 50 meter free (Johnson, 29.99), 1 mtr. diving (Taylor McBride, 204.95), 100 meter fly (Lauren Marchiniak, 1:17.43), 100 meter free (Delahunty, 1:04.45), and the 400 meter free (Vanessa Delgado, 5:14.59).
Highland’s Marie Stockton was the top finisher in the 100 meter breaststroke, while the Trojans’ Jackie Smailis won the 100 meter backstroke.
